Nancy's Lettering Shop
About Our Business
Nancy's Lettering Shop has been in business
since 1976 serving Charleston and the
surrounding area.  We started with a chain stitch
embroidery machine that we still have today. The
business then grew beyond that machine when
we moved from a residence to a new building and
started the silk screening business.  That became
our main product line until 1997 when we added
the areas first Laser Engraver.  The addition of
the plaques, trophies, engraving, and a new
highway through Charleston lead us to move into
our new location at 1115 Lincoln Ave. Thanks to
our loyal customers and new customers we
recently added a second more powerful laser
engraver to serve more of our customers needs.

Five Questions for Nancy Beabout

In 1976, after working part-time with her chain stitch embroidery machine, Nancy
Beabout of Nancy’s Lettering in Charleston decided she wanted to do screen printing.
After visiting a pro shop in Cincinnati, Ohio, she was referred to a screen printer in
Chicago. She’s been working with screen printing ever since.  “It’s a lost art, chain stitch
embroidery. We still do that to some extent, such as monogramming on towels, pillow
cases, names on shirts and jackets,” Beabout said.

Q. What do you like best about your job?
A. It changes every day; there’s a new challenge every day. When I started out we did all
hand-cut film and applied on screen. Now I do all my pattern work on computers. We
also have laser engravers for plaques and awards and self-inking stamps.

Q. Is there anything most people wouldn't know about your business?
A. We also do heat-pressed lettering, where material is pressed onto shirts, and the
sew on letters that the college kids like.

Q. What advice do you have for other people interested in starting a similar business?
A. Think twice. (She laughed.) There’s days that I think, Oh why did I want to do this, why
did I want my own business? But most of the time it’s very satisfying.

Q. What would you like to change about your job?
A. Sometimes I think I need more hours in the day.

Q. What are you working on now?
A. Right now we’re just busy with everything - with shirts, trophies, plaques, end-of-year
awards for schools. It just depends on the time of year and what’s most popular at that
time of year.

Nancy runs the shop along with her son Mark, Daughter in law Julie and her
granddaughters. Nancy’s Lettering Shop offers silk screening, caps, jackets, t-shirts
Trophies, plaques, and bowling shirts. The business is located at 1115 Lincoln Avenue
in Charleston, 345-6007.
